Methyltetrahydrofolate calcium is a methyl derivative of folic acid that naturally forms salt. Also known as L-methylfolic acid, 5-MTHF is the most biologically active and functional form of folic acid. Easier to absorb than folic acid, it belongs to the folic acid family of vitamins (vitamin B9, folic acid), is the coenzyme form of folic acid, and performs many important cellular functions, including DNA replication, cysteine cycling, and homocysteine regulation.

Methyltetrahydrofolate calcium is a metabolically active folic acid found in nature (certain whole, unfortified foods). Folic acid in food must be broken down (digested) from the protein carrier before it can be absorbed.It can be used as an antidote to folic acid antagonists and can also be used to treat giant erythrocyte anemia caused by folic acid deficiency.

Methyltetrahydrofolate calcium is used to prevent and treat Alzheimer's disease and to maintain a healthy mood.
